Be(Com)ing Who I Am: Social Identity Development in Middle School Students in a Lasallian Independent School
This EdD thesis studied how middle school students understand their social identities—basically, who they are and how they fit into different groups. The study focuses on 8th graders in a Lasallian school, a type of school with specific values and traditions. The goal is to learn how students think about their social identities while going through the changes of adolescence and middle school life. The researcher talked to 11 students individually and also had group discussions with some of them. The study is based on Social Identity Theory, which is a way of understanding how people see themselves based on their relationships with different social groups, like friends, family, or classmates. The research highlights what the students have to say about their experiences and explores how the school’s policies and culture help (or don't help) students develop a healthy sense of who they are. Overall, this study aims to give students more of a voice and help schools create better environments for kids to figure out their identities.
